Professional Classical Music Recitals at the Acton Hill Church

in the magnificent acoustic provided by London's largest unsupported wooden barrel-vault ceiling

The Iris Axon Concert Series
Acton Hill Church

Now in its eleventh year, the Iris Axon Concert Series is an annual season of short (60-70 minute) monthly recitals on Sunday afternoons at the Acton Hill Church. The  series was started by Music Director Jane Schopf in 2004 to provide a venue for young musicians starting on their professional careers, many of whom have subsequently enjoyed international success in competitions and on the concert platform. The series has continued to grow and now attracts established international artists as well.

Originally called the
Acton Classical Music Concert Series, it was re-named in 2009 in memory of one of its most loyal supporters, Iris Axon, who generously made possible the purchase of our magnificent concert grand, handmade for us by Clive Pinkham (Cornwall). This beautiful instrument has an excellent touch and tone. The church is ideal for concerts as it has the largest unsupported wooden barrel-vault ceiling in London which brings out the middle harmonics, creating a luxuriously warm sound.

Our magnificent three-manual organ was built at the turn of the last century by Grey & Davidson, the leading London organ builders of their day (they also built the organ for the ballroom at Buckingham Palace), and rebuilt and enlarged by Percy Daniel in 1958. Recently major works and improvements have been undertaken by Bishop and Son, London, who now look after the instrument.
