Arun Menon - Viola
Sunday June 18th, 4pm - 5:15pm
We've added an additional concert for June because we couldn't pass up the opportunity to hear the talented Violist Arun Menon. Arun has prepared a trilling program of music for viola from the Baroque to the Romantics.
One night in 1713 the Italian violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini awoke from a feverish dream in which he'd made a pact with the Devil, and hastened to his instrument to try to re-capture Lucifer's demonically inspired music. By his own accounts his efforts were in vain, but nevertheless the Sonata he wrote that day, which he named the Devil's Trill, became his most popular work.
The Spanish violin virtuoso, Pablo de Sarasate toured the world through the late 19th century and was a frequent visitor to London where he caught the attention of George Bernard Shaw and Arthur Conan Doyle amongst many others. His compositions for violin were written to showcase his virtuosic technique. Arun has daringly arranged the first of Sarasate's Spanish Dances for Viola. We can't wait!
Arun will be accompanied on the Pinkham Grand by Griff Owen.
